How an Ole Miss alum with a love for photography stopped at nothing to land his magazine dream job at Harper's Bazzar in New York

What do you love most about your job?

My favorite aspect of the position is thinking of ideas for stories and then later seeing them come to life in photos.

How did you land your internship at Harper’s?

I started to tweet images that I would Photoshop of myself and Harper’s then-executive director/special projects editor. I found out she was a big Game of Thrones fan, so I Photoshopped her as Khaleesi on the throne and myself as her servant. That got her attention and she tweeted me back asking me to call her office.

What is your worst New York experience?

My worst New York experience was when I first moved here. I had no place to live and it was such a long struggle trying to get an apartment.

Favorite Oxford memory?

My favorite Oxford memories were photographing Ole Miss football games. It was just incredible watching the games from the sidelines.

Best item in your closet?

I just recently got two pairs of the Gucci Princetown leather slippers and I am obsessed. I wear them almost everyday and they go with everything.

What is one thing people would be surprised to know about you?

I am very competitive. I always want and try to be the best at everything that I do-I really hate when other people do better things then me.

Favorite photo you’ve ever captured?

I actually gave up taking photos when I took my job at Bazaar. I haven’t picked up my camera in over two years, so I don’t think I have captured my best photo yet. If I had to pick one that I actually took in my brief career as a photographer, it would have to be the one where Hugh Freeze is holding the Music City Bowl trophy. It means a lot to me because that was the first big sporting event that I got the chance to capture.

What is a piece of Mississippi literature that you have never read but would like to?

There’s a short story that William Faulkner actually wrote for Harper’s Bazaar. I have been trying to find it, but can’t get ahold of that issue. (Yet.)

Greatest indulgence?

My greatest indulgence has to be work. I get super-bored really easily. I get really anxious if I don’t stay busy.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

Hard to say. I used to be the type of person who would always map out their life but I stopped after I moved to NYC. Every day is so unpredictable that I don’t like to look ahead. I would hope to continue to help make amazing photographs for a magazine like Harper’s Bazaar.
